Abstract

This study was one of twelve studies conducted for the Federal Communications Commission in connection with its 2003 decision to relax media ownership regulations. This study analyzed the programming practices of a sample of Big Four network affiliated stations in those markets in which at least one network owned and operated station was located. Although the statistical analyses are fairly simplistic, the results do suggest that owned and operated stations, and stations with newspaper holdings, provide more news and public affairs programming than other stations.
