Abstract
This study builds upon earlier research by Adams (1980) in an effort to determine the extent to which local television broadcasters address local issues and events in their news coverage, and to determine (via comparisons with Adams’ [1980] study), whether broadcasters’ coverage of local issues and events has changed significantly over time. The study applies content analysis techniques to a data set of 96 newscasts (gathered in 1992) from the same Pennsylvania stations analyzed by Adams (1980) in 1976 (certainly, from a sampling standpoint, analyzing only Pennsylvania stations raises some generalizability issues). The results suggest that stations in 1992 devoted more time to coverage of local issues and events than in 1976; however, a greater proportion of this coverage was devoted to stories deemed “sensationalistic/human interest” in nature, as opposed to addressing public affairs.
