Abstract
This study employs both historical and content analysis data to examine the journalistic performance of the Scripps newspaper chain at the beginning of the 20th century, and to explore the possible relationship between journalistic performance and market position. The content analysis indicates that the Scripps chain depended very heavily on syndicated news material, a strategy that the authors argue indicated a lack of commitment to local issues and the subsequent weak position that Scripps papers held in many markets.
