Abstract
In this recent decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the court remanded many of the FCC’s relaxations of its media ownership rules. Of particular interest from a localism standpoint was the court’s assertion that the FCC had not provided adequate evidence that media such as the Internet and cable television served as significant sources of local news and public affairs. Consequently, the court felt that the FCC needed to provide additional justification for including these technologies in their calculations of the number of local media outlets.
