Biography
Assistant Professor of Communication Studies. Professor Kwak joined the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Michigan in the Fall of 2000. His main research centers around political and social effects of mediated and interpersonal communication, including communication and social capital, media and political learning/attitudes, and the influence of new technology. Professor Kwak’s current research project focuses on the influence of Internet use on political and civic engagement, by analyzing the relationships of various Internet use patterns with interpersonal trust, volunteering, political participation, political knowledge, and informal social associations. Professor Kwak’s research has generated top paper awards at national conferences and has been published in Communication Research, Journal of Communication, Human Communication Research, Political Communication, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Political Research Quarterly, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journal of Official Statistics, and Gazette.
