Mobile Voices Community Organizer
The Community organizer will be responsible for assisting in the day-to-day activities of the project, including but not limited to: training, material development, equipment maintenance, technical support and communication with partners. The Coordinator reports directly to the Project Manager. This position is Full time.
Mobile Voices / Voces Móviles (a.k.a. "vozmob") is a project for low-wage immigrant workers in Los Angeles to publish and receive material to and from the web using mobile phones. The project brings together day laborers, scholars, software developers, and community organizers with the purpose of bridging the digital divide in our communities using a popular communication methodology. vozmob is a collaboration between the Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA) and the USC Annenberg School for Communication (ASC).
Job Scope & Duties:
- Support in the implementation of mobile phones technology curriculum; provide instruction for day laborers, domestic workers, who have little or no access to technological resources as a means of bridging the digital divide.
- Support in the implementation of the Mobile Voices plan.
- Support in the implementation of outreach strategies to day laborers centers.
- Collect, process and make available data from project participants, staff and volunteers as well as document progress.
- Implement general maintenance of equipment; maintain and troubleshoot equipment, provide technical support to members of the Mobile voices team.
- Work with other Mobile Voices Volunteers.
- Work closely with Drupal and Open Source Community Developers.
- Other duties as assigned by Project Manager and community board team.
Qualifications:
Required
• Fluency in English and Spanish languages.
• One year of community organizing experience.
• Commitment to social justice and immigrant rights issues.
• Willingness to explore uses of cell phones, including but not limited to Text messaging, picture messaging and Multi-media messages.
• Intermediate knowledge Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and basic familiarity with
programming.
• Knowledge of web browsers.
• Familiarity with the Open Source Community.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Ability to take initiative, self-start, and be creative in addressing issues and problems with limited resources. Ability to work in a collaborative manner with partner organizations and Mobile Voices Participants.
• Knowledge and understanding of the political and historical context of Latino immigrant
communities in this country, with emphasis on Central and South American culture.
A Plus
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse groups, including
immigrant and refugee communities, peer organizations, and related organizations.
• Knowledge of Linux.
• Knowledge of Video production.
• Apple computers/software experience a plus.
• Knowledge of graphic software.
Compensation & Benefits: Commensurate with experience
