Media Research Pre-conference gathers 200+ academics to strategize on research needs for 2007
On January 11, 2007 at the Memphis Cook Convention Center, the Media Policy Research Pre-conference brought together over 200 media policy researchers, students, activists, and policy-makers to discuss media research needs for the coming year. The all-day conference featured eight working group roundtable sessions on key policy research areas, a poster session to present new scholarship, and a keynote address by FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein. A summary document will be produced as a result of the pre-conference, setting out a media policy research agenda for 2007.
The Media Research Pre-conference was a one-day event leading up to the National Conference on Media Reform on January 12-14th. The Pre-Conference was designed to facilitate stronger academic research engagement with policy processes, advocacy needs, and other aspects of media reform. The pre-conference program included:
- A keynote address by FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein;
- A poster session for researchers to present and discuss their work;
- and working group sessions on specific research areas.
About the Working Groups
The working group sessions brought together small groups of researchers and advocates to coordinate efforts on key media policy and reform topics as policy windows develop in 2007. Roundtable discussions were held on:
- Taking Research Public: Strategies for Advocacy Partnerships and Media Impact
- Universal Access and Community Broadband
- Radio
Spectrum and Community Media
We will be reporting soon on the results of these working groups, as well as the broader, transversal concerns raised throughout the pre-conference.
