NHMC Study of Hate Speech to be Released

January 22, 2009 – The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), one of the country’s foremost Latino media advocacy and civil rights organizations, announces an upcoming press conference, January 28th at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to discuss the role of media in hate speech and hate crimes. This research is supported by a Large Collaborative Grant from the Social Science Research Council.

Update - Preliminary report findings now available online


In partnership with civil rights and media advocacy groups and the UCLA/Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC), the press conference will present the preliminary findings of an effort to develop a reliable method for quantifying hate speech in commercial talk radio. This work, funded by the SSRC, is being conducted by the UCLA/Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC). The Institute for Public Representation will present a petition for initiation of an inquiry into hate speech to be filed that same day with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), as well as an official request that the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) update its 1993 report entitled: “The Role of Telecommunications in Hate Crime.”
