Description
"Necessary Knowledge for a Democratic Public Sphere" is an SSRC program that brings academic media and communications research into closer engagement with debates about the shape and future of the digital public sphere. Much of this work involves building a culture of collaboration between researchers and diverse ‘users’ of research, from advocacy groups to community organizations to policymakers.
Our main program activities include grant competitions for researcher/advocate collaboration, a consortium for improving access to media and communications data, and a range of networking, training, and capacity-building workshops. To date, the program has made some 37 competitive research awards—from a pool of over 300 applicants. These activities are built around the Media Research Hub—a community website and database designed to "map" the people, institutions, and research materials in the field, making it more coherent and navigable for its participants.
The program’s broadest purpose is to ensure that debates about crucial infrastructures of public life—media ownership, broadband access, digital broadcasting, community media and other issues—are shaped by high-quality research and a rich understanding of the public interest.
