Biography

BA, Sociology, Oakland University

PhD, Communication, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

My areas of specialization are Cultural Studies, Media Theory and Analysis, Documentary Studies, and Social Discourse Analysis. I teach a variety of courses in the areas of theory and methods in communication and cultural studies, discourse analysis, cultural policy, and media and documentary at the undergraduate and graduate levels. My research interests address culture and governmentality (particularly within Quebec), reception studies, media and cultural theory, and social discourse analysis. I have co-authored (with Michelle Gagnon) L'État de Culture: Généologie Discursive des Politiques Culturelles Québécoises (Montréal: grecc, 1994; second edition 1997). My research has appeared in journals such as Topia, Public, Culture and Policy, Screen, Communication, Discours social/social discourse, and Critical Studies in Mass Communication.

I am currently a co-researcher in the SSHRC funded Concordia Documentary Centre which unites scholars and documentary practitioners in a critical interrogation of the current conditions of the production, circulation and reception of documentary discourses. This past summer, along with my colleague Liz Miller, we partnered with the New York NGO WITNESS to provide an intensive Video Advocacy Institute to 27 human rights activists from 25 countries.
