Abstract

This case study of a developing community cable system in China provides an interesting perspective on the role of community media in a media system undergoing a period of substantial transition. As the study indicates, at this early stage in the telephone of the community cable system, programming generally followed models and formats that were well-established at the national level and had not yet begun to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the technology to foster the development of alternative local viewpoints or perspectives.
