Abstract

This article examines the centrality of the localism principle in the construction of the American system of public broadcasting – illustrating how decentralization of programming decision-making and local production of programming were central objectives motivating the structure of the U.S. public broadcasting system. The authors also examine the consequences of localism as a “philosophy of administration” for public broadcasting.
