Description

Iuridicum remedium (IuRe) is a non-governmental non-profit organisation promoting human rights. It addresses issues of blanket infringements on individual rights as a result of legislative action, and also deals with specific cases of human rights violations. IuRe’s activities include current threats to human rights in the fields of Social Exclusion; Human Rights and Technologies; and Human Rights and Public Administration. IuRe is active in the areas of legislation and legal assistance, and disseminates information to both the professional community and the general public.

Ethical code

  1. The Association is independent of any political party or movement, religion or ideology. Its activities follow the principles contained in the association’s mission and goals (protection of human rights).
  2. The Association does not accept financial support from companies that infringe upon human rights in the Czech Republic or abroad or that actively promote the infringement of human rights (main sources of information: CorpWatch, CEO, EthicalConsumer and PETA).
  3. The Association maintains a maximum level of democracy in its decision-making processes (see Statutes).
  4. The Association is open to partnerships with similarly oriented organisations in the Czech Republic and abroad, as well as ad hoc cooperation with other organisations. The association does not cooperate with organisations that promote racism, fascism, gender inequality or any other kind of discrimination.

Services and programmes

As part of our free legal assistance services, we provide complete legal assistance free of charge to socially disadvantaged individuals and are currently preparing a project for the provision of legal assistance to employees who face intimidation within the workplace. Legal assistance includes the provision of legal representation. In this area, we collaborate with specialised NGOs such as Public Interest Lawyers Association, and with the Office of the Ombudsman.

The Human Rights and Technology Programme includes the Big Brother Awards. This educational project focuses on the protection of individual privacy against excessive snooping by authorities and companies using the latest technologies. As part of the programme, we help prepare expert opinions on relevant legislation.

In the Human Rights and Public Administration programme, we have joined with Otevřená společnost (Open Society) and Transparency International Czech Republic to address, among other things, the draft bill on classified information. One newly launched project being implemented in cooperation with the civic association Oživení focuses on ensuring that the official newsletters published by municipal councils (and thus financed with public funds) contain balanced information.

Our information activities include expert seminars (a seminar on the European arrest warrant was held at Charles University’s Faculty of Law, and another seminar on the secrecy law was held at the Chamber of Deputies) as well as work on the Legal Links Catalogue, which is part of the Kormidlo project run by the Econnect citizen’s association.

An IuRe representative sits on the Committee for Civil and Political Rights of the Government Council for Human Rights; another representative acts as a substitute on the JPD3 Monitoring Committee. IuRe is a member of the EDRi (European Digital Rights) European NGO network.
