United States
Description
The increasing globalization of the media and telecommunications industry and the development of new communications technology have remapped relationships among states, governments, public international organizations, multinational corporations, and individuals around the world. A comprehensive study of how different countries regulate existing and emerging technologies provide scholars, lawyers, and policy makers with a unique insight on how to navigate the changing terrain in their home countries.
Founded in 1989, the Howard M. Squadron Program in Media Law & Society is a center on questions of law and policy involving media and new communications technology. It is also a unique program in the United States that focuses on comparative and transnational media law and policy issues. The Program attracts scholars and students from around the world and has a longstanding relationship with the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy at Oxford University, Moscow Media Law & Policy Centre, Center for Media and Communications Studies (CMCS) at the Central European University, Stanhope Centre for Communications Policy Research in London, UK, as well as the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Drawing upon the resources of its partners and affiliates, which include major media and technology research centers and media assistance organizations in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, the Squadron Program provides a platform for research and exchange of ideas for media law and communications experts around the globe.
The Squadron Program offers:
- Basic courses fundamental to understanding media and communications law;
- Specialized seminars and courses in the legal aspects of the broadcast, telecommunications, publishing, and new media;
- Hands-on legal experience in the above industries through externships, fellowships, and summer placements;
- Opportunities to connect with Cardozo alumni working in the media and telecommunications industries;
- Exposure to cutting-edge scholarships through symposia and publications; and
- A study abroad program where students can learn comparative media and communications law, gaining a first-hand appreciation of impact of cultural diversity on media policy.
