Abstract

This article places media reform within the context of Critical Social Movements, which are defined as movements committed to the empowerment of the marginalized and that challenge the hegemonies of dominant groups and institutions.  The author argues that such Critical Social Movements are key to revitalizing democracy today, and that the struggle for communication rights is one of the most important democratizing struggles of the current era.
