Description
The Center for Global Communication Studies (CGCS) is a leader in international education and training in comparative media law and policy. It affords students, academics, lawyers, regulators, civil society representatives and others working in the media sector the opportunity to evaluate critically and discuss comparative, global and international communications issues. CGCS's network includes the Stanhope Centre (London), Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy (PCMLP) at the University of Oxford, Center for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS) at Central European University (Budapest), and strong partnerships in China and the Middle East. The Center (originally named the Project) was initiated in 2004. Working with the faculty at the School and the University, CGCS:
- Sparks research opportunities for graduate students;
- Organizes conferences; and
- Provides consulting and advisory assistance to academic centers, governments, and NGOs.
CGCS draws on various disciplines (law, political science, and international relations among others) to explore public policy issues and the way media and globalization intersect with the changing nature of states. Other issues of interest include media and democracy, measuring and evaluation of media development programs, public service broadcasting, and the media's role in conflict and post-conflict environments. CGCS is currently conducting projects in Hungary, Jordan, Sudan, England, and China, and is developing projects in India. CGCS cooperates with Penn's Center for the Advanced Study of India, the African Studies Center, and other research nodes at the University.
