Abstract

Written by well-known media activists Gigi Sohn and Andrew Schwartzman, this essay (written as part of a special issue of the Federal Communications Law Journal on the 60th anniversary of the Communications Act of 1934) explores the question of whether the localism principle can survive the various technological, structural, and regulatory changes taking place in the media environment. The authors reach an optimistic conclusion, arguing that continued demand among media audiences for locally-oriented news, information, and entertainment will compel the continuance of the localism principle, even in light of changes that facilitate the development of nationally or globally oriented programming services.
